English is the language of international communication. It is the language of science, of computers, diplomacy, aviation and tourism. Proficiency in English is an essential skill for better academic performance, employability and career advancement. So, the importance of communication skills in English cannot be undermined. This foundation course in Communicative Skills in English has been designed to enhance communicative competence and confidence, leading to the holistic development of the students. Communication skills in English needs to be strengthened as English is the language of socialising, entertainment and work. Due to the increasing demand for expertise in English communication as a prerequisite for a successful career, the syllabus of this course has been designed to impart effective communication skills in English, the language that has become the lingua franca of the world. In the new normal online teaching and learning environment, keeping in mind the need to bridge the gap in the students’ skills in English language use, the Department of English, Christ College, Irinjalakuda provides them an online platform to better their communication skills in English. We have named it Towards A Better English. The emphasis is on functional English usage. The syllabus focusses on practically oriented exercises and real-life situations. The aim is to strengthen the English proficiency of the students of Christ College, Irinjalakuda and give them an edge over students from other institutions. Course objectives • To enhance the learner’s communication skills by giving adequate exposure in LSRW -listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and the related sub-skills • To help the learner get rid of his present flaws in pronunciation and grammar • To build the learner’s confidence in oral and interpersonal communication by reinforcing the basics of English, focussing especially on natural, contextual and purposeful language use • To enable the learner to achieve adequate linguistic skills to compete in the academic and job sector • To help students shed their inhibitions to converse in English and equip them to use English language effectively in the public and private domains • To introduce various online platforms for learning and improving English at the basic level

On completion of the course the learner will be able to:
1. Exhibit an improved vocabulary and accuracy in grammar
2. Produce words with right pronunciation
3. Improve LSRW- listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and the related sub-skills
4. Demonstrate good public speaking skills
5. Develop the confidence to use English effortlessly in their professional and personal life
6. Enable students to use various online platforms to learn and improve English at the basic level
